On the planet the diversity of animals is very large. In the species of horses there are hundreds of breeds. These have characteristics in common and others that are typical of each race. In this installment we will address the maroon horses.

Undoubtedly, horses are wonderful beings of God’s creation. These animals have provided their help and friendship to humans since ancient times.

Maroon horses are animals that live in the wild but have domestic ancestors.

Some populations of Maroon horses are treated as wildlife.  Therefore these horses are called “wild horses”.

These horses come from horses that are probably lost, escaped pets. They may also have been released into the wilderness and managed to survive and reproduce there.

The logical thing is that these horses away from humans develop the behaviors of a wild horse.

On the other hand some maroon horses are sometimes cared for and used by men.

For this reason it is often referred to as semi-maroron horses.

Horses are so attractive that the Rolling Stones composed a song called Wild Horses from which we left the video below. Learn more about maroon horses…

Maroon horse herds

The first specimens of modern horses arrived on the new continent thanks to the Spanish colonizers. This happened in the mid-16th century.

From there the Aborigines began to have contact with the horses. They even gave these wonderful animals a friendlier and more respectful treatment.

Usually the breed of Maroon horses likes to live in herds. These are made up of small groups led by a dominant male horse.

Thus, groups tend to be small. They can have from three to five animals. In the event that they conform large groups, it is about a dozen.

This dynamic is often transformed over time. This usually happens as young animals are expelled from the group in which they were born.

So they usually integrate with other groups of Maroon horses.

It is important that the dynamics of these animals are respected. So you must be very respectful of nature.

One of them takes tours in the area of Laguna Azul (Torres del Paine National Park). In these spaces remains a herd made up of about 100 horses.

Tourists are an active part of scientific projects. For these people are involved in the process of observing, identifying and registering horses.

It is important to note that the approaches are made up to only about 100 meters from the herd. This is done in this way so as not to invade your natural space and its usual performance.

If you wish to participate in this experience with the Maroon horses you must locate one of the local tour operators.
