Evidence of probiotic efficiency in horses is weak

A study published by Kauter, A., Epping, L., Semmler, T. and other authors called “The gut microbiome of horses: current research on equine enteral microbiota and future perspectives. Anim microbiome” found that the evidence supporting the Probiotic use in horses is weak.
Many times they cite beneficial relationships in food products with the purpose of promoting a brand. However, and as this study demonstrates, in many cases the evidence is not enough.
We must be attentive because just as the evidence can be weak. We can be induced to give products that are really harmful to our horse.
Horse food marketing must be careful to show real results and we must be informed consumers. We leave this article published by horsetalkz

Evidence of probiotic efficiency in horses is weak

Evidence of probiotic efficiency in horses is weak. This is according to a just-published review, despite several supposed clinical applications, including acute enterocolitis and diarrhea in foals.

A German review team set out to examine current research on the gut microbiome in horses. They noted that products classified as probiotics had reached the commercial market, not only for humans but also for horses.

Experts defined a probiotic as “live strains of strictly selected microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host”.

A horse feeding with no probiotics
A horse feeding with no probiotics

In the United States, probiotics can either be classified as a drug needed to gain approval from the Food and Drug Administration, or as a feed supplement “generally regarded as safe” based on information provided by the producers, which removes the need for FDA approval.

In the European Union, probiotics are regarded as feed additives and gut flora stabilizers for healthy animals.

The EU applies very strict regulations for products labeled as probiotics. Producers need to prove product identity, safety and efficacy to a scientific committee.

So far, bacteria such as Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, Bacillus, Streptococcus and Bifidobacterium are considered as putative beneficial probiotics for horses, Anne Kauter and her colleagues reported in their review, published in the journal Animal Microbiome.

“Probiotics should be able to survive the extreme gastric environment, have an antimicrobial property against pathogens and adhere to mucus and epithelial cells,” they said.

Probiotics for horses are designed to reach and establish themselves in the large colon, where many diseases occur.

What was the results?

The review team noted that a recent study investigated the effects of multi-strain probiotics on the bacterial microbiota of foals during and after administration. Limited changes were found concerning the relative abundance of bacterial families, with an enrichment of Lactobacillus in the probiotic group only at week six.

“Yet, evidence of probiotic efficiency in horses is weak despite several putative clinical applications. This applications including acute enterocolitis, diarrhea in foals, as well as fecal sand clearance,” they wrote.

The authors noted that understanding the complex interactions of microbial communities. This microbial including bacteria, archaea, parasites, viruses and fungi of the gut with states of either health or disease is still an expanding research field in both human and veterinary medicine.

Gut disorders and their consequences are among the most important diseases of domesticated horses. But current gaps of knowledge hinder adequate progress in terms of disease prevention and microbiome-based interventions.

“Current literature on enteral microbiomes mirrors vast data and knowledge imbalance. With only a few studies tackling archaea, viruses and eukaryotes compared with those addressing the bacterial components.”

One of the most important things in sports is that they are done on equal terms. That is why doping institutions. Today we will show you the news of a Canadian showjumping that is in the process of doping in a Pan American Games.

A Canadian showjumping rider who competed at the Pan-American Games in Peru in August has tested positive for a metabolic byproduct of cocaine.

Nicole Walker has been provisionally suspended by the FEI as a consequence.

Walker was a member of the fourth-placed Canadian showjumping team and also finished fourth with Falco Van Spieveld in the individual final at the games.

The sample was taken on August 7, the day of the team final in Lima.

What drug was detected in the Canadian Showjumper?

It tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. Benzoylecgonin is a prohibited substance under the FEI’s anti-doping rules for human athletes.

The FEI says Canadian showjumping Walker has the option to request a preliminary hearing. This will be before the FEI Tribunal to apply for the lifting of the provisional suspension.

Disqualification of the athlete is a separate proceeding. That is part of the results management process dealt with by Panam Sports, which organises the Pan-American Games.

The Canadian showjumping has exercised her right to request a hearing before the Panam Sports Disciplinary Commission.

Once the Disciplinary Commission has made a decision on the disqualification of the athlete, and team Canada’s final placing, the FEI will be in a position to make any necessary reallocation of the Olympic quota.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic quota places were available to the three best-ranked teams from Groups D (North America) and/or E (Central & South America) at the Pan-American Games this year, excluding the teams already qualified.

The three teams that earned qualification in Peru were Brazil, Mexico and Canada.

The FEI said in a statement it would not comment further on the case at this time. That is in order to maintain the integrity of the ongoing legal process.

We will be following the case for more information

The horse continues to stand out in the world of performing arts. Being one of those animals that show abilities to perform the steps that teach them.

This is a sample of the great intelligence that these living beings have and is an invitation to take care of it and respect them as they are.

For these animals to achieve that level of perfection they are trained by experts who in the end see the reward in the impeccable performances of the horses.

Equestrian flamenco acts are performed within the framework of Spanish traditions. However, they also offer them as a private service for special events.

It is very important to emphasize that the horse must be in conditions of balanced behavior to make these presentations. Without a doubt, the horse in Spanish flamenco has a luxury role that we should enjoy. Let’s take advantage of this wonderful show.

Equine melanoma in perianal area

Equine melanoma. Detection and treatment.

Nov13

Today we will discuss an important issue for equine health. And is that the health and welfare of horses is one of the priorities for Gustavo Mirabal Castro. That is why today we will talk about equine melanoma.

Equine melanoma is one of the diseases that is left untreated given its slow progress. However, with the appropriate treatments, it can be eliminated and / or delayed. That is why today we will give you information and some advice for its detection and treatment. Some treatments are not available in Spain, however, perhaps this type of information may arouse interest and begin to be considered.

We will learn more about equine melanoma thanks to the information in the article by J. Luis Mtnz Arquero published in “Dressage and horses”. Based on your article and some additional information we have developed this post. We hope you like it and we promote these initiatives.

What is equine melanoma?

They are tumors that usually appear as firm black masses, in the form of a potato, in areas without hair or with little body hair, as in the maslo.

When most people hear the term “melanoma,” they think of skin cancer caused by excessive sun exposure. In horses, however, melanomas are associated with the color of the layer, specifically the color of the layered layer.

Up to 80% percent of thrush horses have melanomas.

The gene responsible for thrush color is a dominant gene that causes progressive depigmentation of hair. These horses can be born of any color: black, brown, even paint, but colored hairs are replaced by white hairs as the horse ages.

The first signs of “gray hair” are found around the eyes or the nose in foals and can be seen on the day they are born. An aged gray horse could be called white, but true white horses have pink skin.

A thrush will have black skin and dark eyes.

Equine melanoma in perianal area
Equine melanoma in perianal area

In which areas of the horse does equine melanoma commonly develop?

In most cases, equine melanomas appear alone in the perianal region. This is quite common in horses older than 6 years.

Equine melanoma can also appear in the parotid region, in the penis and in the periocular area.

On less common occasions, equine melanoma appears in animals less than 4 years old in the trunk and limb areas

Is equine melanoma malignant or benign?

Equine melanoma is a type of tumor, usually benign, that occurs more frequently in layered horses.

Despite this there are elements that help us differentiate malignant equine from benign melanomas.

When melanoma occurs multiplely in the same area of the horse, tumors are considered malignant.

A malignant melanoma can behave in different ways. The 3 behaviors that can have malignant equine melanomas can be:

  • Slow progressive growth without metastasis. This is the most difficult to identify and therefore runs the risk of letting it grow too much.
  • Slow progressive growth over years and subsequent rapid growth with metastasis. This change allows us to take action but requires horse monitoring and careful observation.
  • Malignant growth since its appearance. This is usually treated quickly because it arouses suspicion. These melanomas can be very aggressive and you have to take their treatment very seriously.

Occasionally, these melanomas can reach large size and if they are found in the perianal region, they can cause problems with defecation and urination

Detail of equine melanoma in perianal area
Detail of equine melanoma in perianal area

How does an equine melanoma develop?

Most equine melanomas have slow growth for years without metastases (it spreads throughout the body). This is why melanomas are generally considered benign in horses.

Some melanomas that have been static for years may suddenly grow and metastasize. A smaller percentage of melanomas will show rapid growth and metastasis from the beginning.

Melanomas found in horses that are not thrush are generally considered highly malignant. Metastasis can occur in regional lymph nodes near the original tumor or in body cavities or internal organs (lungs, liver or spleen).

Melanomas have also been found in muscles, spine, heart and guttural pockets. Many horses do not show clinical signs of internal metastasis, but lameness, cramping or neurological symptoms can occur.

Any dark mass in a thrush horse is presumed to be an equine melanoma and most are diagnosed only by appearance. A biopsy will confirm the diagnosis. It can indicate how malignant that particular tumor is, although it is not necessarily predictive of tumor behavior or metastasis.

Internal tumors can be found with ultrasound or rectal palpation.

While there is currently nothing we can do to prevent the development of melanoma, there are several treatment options available.

Traditionally, equine melanoma has been left alone due to its slow growth and lack of pain or clinical signs. On the other hand, early treatment can slow or stop the progression.

Veterinary solutions to equine melanoma

Small tumors are easily removed surgically. Depending on the location of the horse’s mass and temperament, they can often be removed with foot sedation instead of general anesthesia.

The use of surgical lasers have been very successful in removing an equine melanoma, even when the tumors are slightly larger. Complete excision will be curative for an individual tumor, but new tumors may arise later.

Below we can see a video of a laser surgery to treat equine melanoma

Very large tumors or those in difficult places may require extensive surgery and often cannot be completely removed.

Cimetidine that is an antihistamine has immunomodulatory effects. This has been reported to reduce the size and number of tumors. Long-term therapy (at least three months) is required and clinical efficacy has not been repeatable in all studies.

The intratumoral injection of chemotherapeutic agents, such as cisplatin, may be effective for small masses. However, there are still health and safety problems for the horse. There are even risks for the owner and the treating veterinarian when these medications are used.

The hope of the melanoma vaccine

Recently, a vaccine was developed for the treatment of melanoma in dogs. Early studies are proving promising for use in horses. This vaccine creates an immune response against melanoma cells, causing the body to fight against tumors. The vaccine is given four times at two week intervals. If the horse responds, the vaccine is given every six months.

At the moment I don’t know anyone in Spain who treats equine melanomas with this vaccine. For this reason I cannot tell you about my personal experience. All the data that I have collected here is easy and can be found in any veterinary book.

I am sure that in a few years treatments with the melanoma vaccine will be very common in Spain and other countries. And it is that the thrush color remains the most abundant in the Iberian equine horse.

From here we take care of spreading this technological advance so that it is adopted in a massive way. The treatment of equine melanoma through the vaccine will result in the welfare of the horse and its performance.

We hope that many veterinarians will be able to see in the future not only a business but also a way to fulfill their professional work better. Support us in our campaign.

The eyes of the horse - Detect stress in horses

The eyes of the horse. How to detect stress in horses?

Nov12

Some may wonder how to detect stress in horses. A recent scientific study determined that the horse’s eyes can help us detect signs of stress. Specifically the look of the horse is the key to discover it.

So now you can know if your horse is stressed just by looking him in the eye, but let’s analyze a little more.

Usually the owners of these animals, trainers and riders learn to know them and know when they feel anxious. But stress can begin silently and not exactly the horse must be kicking the wind.

Scientists have discovered that the eyelids of horses are key when you want to know if an equine is in a moment of stress.

The novelty of this discovery is that it is not something invasive and therefore the animal will not suffer.

On the contrary, it implies a detailed observation to know if the horse has stress or not.

Do Horses' Eyes Reveal Their Stress?

The reflex eyes of the soul … and stress

They say that the eyes are the reflection of the soul and that through them you can know how a person is …

In this sense, it has been discovered that this technique works with horses.

Although the study shows the importance of eyelid contractions as indicators of stress.

And that is what makes this study interesting and novel, since you only need to see the horses carefully.

Although there are other methods to find out how are heart rate monitors or blood cortisol levels.

So just look at the horse and look at the way he moves his eyelids. Definitely the eyes of the horses are the key to detect stress in horses

“With humans, we already know the flickering changes when we are under pressure. Some studies have shown that we blink more when we are disturbed, while others found that we blink less. ” Katrina Merkies, professor at the Ontario Agricultural College of the University of Guelph (Canada).

The teacher adds to her explanation that this same method wanted to apply it to the horses to know if it worked …

“We wanted to see if the rates of flickering of the horses also varied,” Professor Merkies.

The study of horse eyes and how to detect stress in horses

For this phase of the study the researchers took 33 horses of different races as a sample.

First phase of the study to find out how to detect stress in horses

Once all the horses were in the enclosure they were subjected to slightly stressful scenarios.

The horses were from three riding class facilities in eastern Ontario, Canada.

One of the ways to generate discomfort or restlessness was by taking away their food for a few minutes.

“During the food restriction, the eyelid contractions increased from two to six contractions per minute” statements from the project researchers.

Second Phase – Provoke the horse

Another phase of the study included throwing a ball in front of a horse to try to scare him.

That way provoke a motivated reaction to stress and fright. The idea was to quantify the bodily reactions. This includes the reaction of the eyes of the horses.

Third Phase – Isolation

Later, in a next phase, they separated a horse from the others …

So I could see them visually but I wasn’t with them for a few minutes.

Last phase – Observation

Finally, the scientists removed the food from the horse for three minutes just at lunchtime while their companions could start feeding.

This whole process is in videos because each phase of the investigation was recorded.

In the same way they were attentive to the movements of their body to know how they express themselves.

The eyes of the horse - Detect stress in horses
The eyes of the horse – Detect stress in horses

Results of the study

They observed that there were changes in the movement of their eyes and ears, the inclination of the head and the general restlessness.

As they moved away the food they discovered that seeing others eating and not eating them, it is stressful.

“The withdrawal of food was something new, so it is likely that this was the cause for the most stressed,” said Professor Merkies.

The analyzes and the discovery

After all these exercises, the videos were analyzed and this is the result:

At the most distressing moment for the horses they noticed that the animals blinked less but moved the upper eyelids more.

during the most distressing moment, they noticed that the animals blinked less but moved the upper eyelids more.

Generally, horses often blink several times a day.

However, that flicker decreased to an average of five blinks per minute during stress compared to eight or nine times per minute when they were relaxed.

When they had no food, they got stressed

The scientists determined that at times when they were not eating and saw the other horses feed …

Eyelid contractions increased on average from two contractions per minute to six contractions per minute.

It should be noted that with the other tests the scientists did not notice the same behavior.

So it can be concluded that one of the things that causes more stress in horses is not eating.

In fact, with the other stress tests the behavior was not the same as when it came to food restriction.

“There is no technique that tells us everything, but this is another tool that we can use to better understand our animals,” Merkies concluded.

The horse’s behavior and body language

The horse is an animal that communicates with its body.

Your body language is what shows how this animal feels.

The way he moves his ears, how he walks, and even his movements with his legs tell us something.

And the blinking … The eyes of the horses are keys to know how they feel. Therefore, the eyes are key to detect stress.

This speaks of whether they are happy or sad, if they are hungry or thirsty, if they are anxious or not, etc.

The way the horse behaves is the one that tells us if there are diseases or do not feel well.

These animals are very intelligent and always make themselves understood.

They are generally very calm, playful and do not like confinement.

In addition to not eating on time, the fact of being locked away for a long time, without anyone riding or exercising them, causes them anxiety and can become bothersome.

If that happens then the mammal begins to whinny, kick and become somewhat aggressive.

However, if you are taken out of the barn for a walk, brush or walk, your attitude will surely change.

What Does That Mean? Subtle Signs of Stress in Your Horse

Looks that kill, a language the horses handle

The eyes of the horse
The eyes of the horse

The looks are another language. And although the horse is clean and beautiful if his eyes are sad something happens.

They cannot express themselves with words but their eyes certainly say a lot.

Now they also reflect whether you are stressed or not.

In any case, it is enough to have direct and close contact with the animal, look at it face to face and read its body language.

Many times when a horse is a victim of abuse his body tells us that there is something wrong with him … His attitude and the horse’s eyes speak to us.

They see open wounds and flies sniffing around them, their head is down all the time, they have trouble walking and they certainly show sadness.

And as we mentioned, his eyes also tell us that there is loneliness, pain and even cataracts.

Yes, this disease also happens to horses.

When a horse has these symptoms, it is because they do not take good care of it, do not eat enough or simply beat it, subject it and enslave it to work.

The saddest thing about this is that whoever suffers is the animal, its owner can get a few reais per ride that gives tourists more the horse is the one who pays for the broken dishes.

And his body is an agent that reveals the physical and emotional state of the horse.

Let’s learn to read your language! Let us denounce animal abuse because it not only damages it but prevents it from getting the best out of it

A horse opening a box after observing a human.

Equines are able to learn how to perform tasks by watching their human handlers, a new study from Germany suggests.

They in the study from the University of Nürtingen Geislingen learned how to open a feed box by watching a human do it.

The researchers set up a task that involved pressing a button to open a box containing pieces of carrot and apple. The horses were shown various techniques for pressing the button to open the box by their owners. Some owners used their head to press the button, some their hand, some their foot, and some used their head and hand together.

It is already known that horses can learn by watching a demonstrator, but the question was, would the horses follow the particular demonstrated technique, or come up with their own?

While almost all seemed to understand the connection between the pressing the button and the box opening. They learned from watching their owner. Some followed the same technique while others found their own methods by trial and error. For example, if the person used their foot to press the button, some horses would use a hoof. But others would use their head, or a mixture of head and hoof.

Methods of opening the box were demonstrated by a human.
Methods of opening the box were demonstrated by a human.

About the Study

The study has been published in the journal Animal Cognition.

In the control group, which received no demonstration at all, a few horses managed to solve the problem on their own. A few horses showing an ability to “think outside the box”.

“This means we have to be very careful about what we let our horses see. We don’t want them to learn how to open gates, doors, or even feed boxes. Of course, however careful we are, there’s no guarantee that a few of them won’t work it out for themselves”

Peyo el caballo sanador de Francia

peyo

Come, juega, duerme, etc.

Mongolian Groom euthanized after leg injury in Breeder's Cup

When humans fail horses – Mongolian Groom

Nov09

Horse sports are in the eye of the hurricane. The euthanization of the Mongolian Groom horse due to a serious injury highlighted the treatment of horses in sports. Some think that the public opinion look is uninformed. But public opinion can be mobilized to ban horse sports without distinction. That is why you cannot disregard your claims.
Only if we put the welfare of the horses in the first place can we guarantee a future for horse sports. Even if horse sports exist, if horse welfare is not our top priority, we do not deserve horse sports to exist.
Here is an excellent article that reflects on this. We hope you enjoy it.

When humans fail horses

There’s been a lot of chatter going on this week on social media about what happened to Mongolian Groom in the Breeder’s Cup Classic. I’ve seen it discussed by so many different people, from so many different backgrounds. Some are blaming the track, some are blaming officials, some are even blaming Mongolian Groom’s pedigree (that one I don’t particularly agree with).

Exclusive Video: Fatal Injury of Mongolian Groom at Breeders’ Cup Race

Seeing what the non-horse people are saying is probably the most troubling. It’s easy, as an “insider” who understands the animals and the sport a lot more, to shrug off those opinions or roll your eyes at them, saying they’re just the uneducated public. But the truth is, their opinion is what’s going to make or break this sport. Public perception matters, and what’s happening now is the ultimate PR nightmare: a horse breaking down on prime time tv at a track that has been making headlines all year for horse deaths. The public sees jockeys whipping the tar out of horses, a horse’s leg turning into a spaghetti noodle underneath it, and then voila – yet another death. It’s incredibly bad for racing, and honestly it doesn’t exactly shed a positive light on ANY equestrian sports, as far as the public is concerned. They don’t know the difference.

What happend with Mongolian Groom

The videos of Mongolian Groom’s last few workouts also make you wonder what exactly happened here. The horse didn’t look good on these videos.

https://www.xbtv.com/video/workout/mongolian-groom-galloped-at-santa-anita-park-on-october-31st-2019/?fbclid=IwAR0lQs4Jj8ZeM8V_n2NZsuLNVYaukterCUqPCgn19c3kLpFcfsoKWcWEg6w

He’s also had a pretty packed schedule. In the last 12 months he raced 13 times. He spent all spring training and racing at Santa Anita when horses were dropping left and right. He traveled to the east coast and back twice. He’s done 9 stakes races since April of this year – 7 months time. At one point he even did two Grade 1 races two weeks apart, with a third less than a month later. Not a schedule you see that often with a hard-running stakes horse.

Mongolian Groom had a heck of a year, with no breaks. He finished pretty consistently in the money and put up speed figures between 105 and 126 all but one time. If his record tells us anything, it’s that the horse was definitely a trier.

He showed up and he did his job, time and again, right up until he couldn’t. This wasn’t a horse that colicked, or had a pasture accident, or whatever myriad ways that horses find to die on a regular basis, this wasn’t a case where everything was done right and the horse just fell on some shit luck, this was man-made, on the world stage, while in service to entertain people, with a lot of questionable factors involved. Combine his record, how he looked in those workout videos, the controversy surrounding Santa Anita, and what happened in the Classic… it makes me feel like humans really failed this horse along the way. Massively.

What will it happend to horse sports?

That’s the part of this that is so heartbreaking to me. The shit storm is really tough to watch, but honestly… maybe the sport deserves it, maybe all horse sports do, maybe we ALL need to do a better job of looking after these horses, and if we can’t do that, if we can’t put the well-being of the horse as the highest priority, then maybe we don’t deserve to have a sport. Business is business, yeah sure I get it, but at what cost? I will never be comfortable with the idea of horses being disposable. And using up a good horse certainly isn’t limited to just racing, you see it all the time. Shoot, there was an eventer that did Burghley (didn’t finish, but made it about halfway around), Blenheim, AND Pau. And how many people are out there showing 3+ days a week, 20+ weeks a year?

Maybe I’m overreacting or being a bleeding heart, or maybe I’m just tired of seeing horses pay the price. It’s been a long year, with way too many lost horses in several sports, and my heart is weary. We haven’t done our best by these horses. But I do know one thing… if we don’t fix this – if racing doesn’t fix their massive PR problem, and if all horse sports don’t sit up and pay attention to what’s happening here – it will trickle down to all of us. Someday the industry as a whole will have to answer for this, and that day is coming.

Expo 2020 Dubai

Expo 2020 Dubai has launched a campaign to attract people to “people with determination” (people with disabilities with physical or mental). This in order to achieve employment in this prestigious event to be held next year.

The objective of the program is to strengthen people with determination in this region and offer job opportunities. In effect, it will allow them to expand their professional skills and competencies. Therefore this represents an opening in the field of labor law.

This initiative has been given thanks to the support of the Ministry of Community Development. So he has developed the initiative by conducting a pilot program with two candidates such as Salem Bawazir and Ali AlBalooshi.

Expo 2020 is adjusting its space to ensure that it meets international standards for people with disabilities.

Among the modifications to meet these standards are the following:

  • Parking spaces and delivery points, audible signs, modified prayer rooms with seats, accessible ablution room and ramps.
  • On the other hand, an internal employee awareness program is being developed that allows them to maximize their commitment to the Inclusion Program candidates.

The theme of Expo 2020 is as follows

“Connecting minds, creating the future”

Since it includes the inclusion of persons of determination in the Volunteer program of Expo 2020.

In summary

It is comforting to see the progress of various countries in the world that decide to make progress in making a world more friendly for people with disabilities.

It should be noted that in Dubai it is called people with determination. Regardless of the term with which we refer to these people, they have the same rights as the rest.

The importance of educational and labor inclusion is that they can have a productive future as professionals. Therefore they can be part of the productive apparatus of your country.
