Hans-Heinrich Isenbart is one of the most distinguished experts in horses. Some might think that he devoted himself body and soul to the study of horses, but nothing could be further from the truth. Hans-Heinrich Isenbart was born on February 5, 1923 in Vienna, the capital of Austria. Vienna is one of the main European cities highlighted by its beauty.

Son of an officer and the daughter of a merchant, since very young he had contact with the equine world. His contact with the world of horses was due to the fact that some relatives were cavalry officers.

The studies of Hans

Hans-Heinrich Isenbart grew up in Hamburg. There he attended the Wilhelm-Gymnasium university preparatory school one of the oldest schools in Hamburg. The school was founded in 1881 and was renamed Wilhelm-Gymnasium in honor of Emperor Wilhelm I. There have studied outstanding personalities such as James Franck, a German physicist who won the Noble prize in physics with Gustav Hertz.

Most of his family was official but Hans-Heinrich Isenbart could not follow the family tradition because his maternal grandmother was of Jewish origin. This made the Nazis, who had power in Germany at that time, prevent him from pursuing a military career.

Work and university life of Hans-Heinrich Isenbart

In 1945 he worked as a freelance in the Nordwestdeutschen Rundfunks (Corporation of the Radio of the Northwest of Germany) a prominent public radio station based in Hamburg.

After completing his law studies in Vienna, he returned to Hamburg. In 1951, he returned to the Northwest Radio Corporation of Germany as editor.

His career as a sports reporter on television began in 1956. His first jobs there were to report on the equestrian Olympic competitions held in Stockholm, Sweden. He also had to make the journalistic reviews of other Olympic competitions held in Melbourne. It was through television coverage that for the first time he achieved fame.

TV coverage Winkler-Halla

Hans-Heinrich Isenbart gained fame through television coverage on June 17, 1956. During the Olympic Games in Melbourne Australia, but whose Olympic equestrian events were held in Stockholm, Sweden, one of the most interesting events of the history of Olympic equestrian competitions.

There the jumping rider Hans Günter Winkler suffered a muscular tear in the groin in the individual team qualifying round. Despite the tear, Hans Günter Winkler continued in the fight with Halla, the mare he rode. Despite the difficulties, Winkler and Halla achieved double Olympic gold, in individual and team competition.

Not to let the German team leave the classification, Hans Günter Winkler participated with Halla in the second round despite great pain. As a result of the pain and analgesic injections and suppositories, many sources indicate that it was morphine, Winkler was so dizzy that he had to take a very strong black coffee to avoid falling asleep.

Before starting Winler was shaking. In this condition, Winkler could barely ride on Halla. Both reached the obstacles but without transmitting the usual signals through the pressure of the thigh. Despite this and thanks to Halla’s intelligence, they managed to overcome obstacles and win gold.

In the television coverage made by Isenbart during the last obstacle he shouted a legendary phrase that would remain for the story:

“Und Halla lacht, als wüsste sie, um was es geht”

And Halla laughs, as if she knows what it is.

What are the patterns of horse’s coat?

The basic scheme of color genetics of equine fur has been largely solved. DNA tests are used to determine the probability that a horse has offspring of a certain color. The discussion and the investigation continue on some aspects and details on the color patterns, in particular those that surround the patterns of spots and some variants derived from genetic defects.

Genetics behinde equine colors

Genetically, all horses have red or black base colors according to geneticists. The so-called “reds” by geneticists with what are called chestnut in equestrian slang. These are represented by the absence of the extension gene (“e”). Blacks are based on the presence of the extension gene (“E”). Therefore, red or brown (“ee”) and black (“EE” or “Ee”) are the two equine base colors.

The Bay color is expressed when a common genetic modifier, the Agouti gene, works on the black base color. The wide range of patterns and colors of coats are created by the action of additional modifier genes on one of these three layer colors.

Statistically, the most commonly seen horse color phenotypes are identified by the following terms:

Bay:

Body color ranges from a light reddish-brown to very dark brown. The main color variations are:

• Dark bay: very dark red or brown hair.
• Blood bay: bright red hair; often considered simply “bay”.
• Brown: The word “brown” is used by some breed registries to describe dark bays.

Chestnut:

A reddish body color with no black. The main color variations are:

• Liver chestnut: very dark brown coat.
• Sorrel: Reddish-tan to red coat, about the color of a new penny. It is the most common shade of this base color.
• Blond or light chestnut: term for lighter tan coat with pale mane and tail.
  

  Gray:

A horse with black skin but white or mixed dark and white hairs. Gray horses can be born any color, and lighten as they age. Variations of gray that a horse may exhibit over its lifetime include:

• Salt and Pepper or “steel” gray: Usually a younger horse, an animal with white and dark hairs.
• Dapple gray: a dark-colored horse with lighter rings of graying hairs.
• Fleabitten gray: an otherwise fully white-haired horse that develops red hairs.
• Rose gray: a gray horse with a reddish or pinkish tinge to its coat.

There is a mark that identifies uniquely horses?

The simple answer is yes. Markings on horses are distinctive white areas on an otherwise dark base coat color. Horses have some markings, and they help us to identify the horse as a unique individual. Markings are present at birth and do not change over the course of its life. Most markings have pink skin underneath of the white hairs. There are different markings on horse body which are: Facial markings and Leg markings.

Ethology is the name of the science that studies animal behavior, of those that are free and domesticated.This is responsible for  analyzing animals biologically and psychologically, and seeks to interpret their behavior. In this article we will address the meaning of this science and its application to the horse that it’s called equine ethology

But also how it is associated with the behavior of horses and their relationship with man.

Trends in Equine Ethology

Today “ethological” currents have become very fashionable, ranging from “ethological” or “natural” taming to “ethological equitation”.

In this sense, it can be said that there are three main trends with different approaches to the horse and that must be differentiated.

Equine Ethology – Approach 1

This first approach arises according to the following concept: by nature, the horse is afraid of the man it considers a predator.

Therefore, the foal has to be detached from birth to break this negative association with man.

This is how the imprinting theory was born, Dr. Miller’s method.

Equine Ethology – Approach 2

The second current is based on the gregarious nature of the horse: the horse is a herd animal, it needs to feel protected by a leader.

In this order of ideas man must become the dominant figure.

That way you can work on the submissive nature and the instinct of acceptance of the horse.

This perspective constitutes the line of the “whisperer”, “natural taming” and the entire American movement.

Equine Ethology – Approach 3

All their education and training are based, then, on the stimulus of their own reflection, not only respecting their nature but also stimulating their mental and emotional growth.

That is, this approach does not modify the lifestyle of the horse, but training and management are adapted to the needs of each animal. In this way, a correct physical, mental and emotional balance is ensured.

What happens around equine ethology?

The terms equine ethology and ethological training are becoming commonplace in the equestrian domain. Yet they seem to be used with a conspicuous lack of clarity and with no mention of learning theory. Most of what we do to train horses runs counter to their innate preferences.

Taking a horse’s biological needs and capabilities into consideration can make for more efficient and more ethical horse training. This was said by many international equine behavior expert. This often-overlooked concept is now the first of 10 basic training principles adopted by the ISES. The ISES is the International Society for Equitation Science.
