In the equestrian world it is important to integrate a multidisciplinary team when dealing with horses. In this team it is important the joint union of criteria of the veterinarian, trainers, riders, blacksmiths. It is vital that the horse is known to see strange behaviors that may indicate that something is not right. For this reason, the role of the farrier is very important, as is the good health of the horse’s feet. Guaranteeing the welfare of the animal. The farrier Hans Castelijns, is a multifaceted and versatile man since he combines his profession of farrier and veterinarian. In this way he has dedicated himself to the hardware and equine podiatry throughout his career.

Laminitis

Treatment against laminitis

Jan02

Laminitis is a complex metabolic disease whose final result may be the separation of the helmet from the limb.

Symptoms can vary from a slight limp on one side to the horse lying down.

Also sweating and complaining, sometimes the symptomatology is diagnosed as colic or azoturia.

Treatment against laminitis

The first step when a horse shows symptoms of pain in their hooves is: Call the veterinarian.

Then it is necessary to comply with the doctor’s orders and wait for it to work to apply treatment against laminitis

What to do while …

While the veterinarian arrives take the following precautions, which are part of the treatment against this disease.

  • Reduce the food drastically.
  • Apply heat.
  • Place the helmet in a hot solution of magnesium sulfate (which we pour over a bucket).
  • Sell the area, without squeezing.
  • To alleviate the pain dissolve a few aspirin (around five) in a little water
  • Mix this with honey and flour and spread this mixture on the tongue every four hours until the veterinarian supplies a more adequate analgesic.

Notes:

  • In case of acute laminitis, the most usual treatment will be to immediately inject antihistamines of 27 mg x 50 kg. of weight, in addition to cortisones of 100 to 600 mg.
  • We must also help the functioning of the intestine, for which it is necessary to use laxatives and place the animal in very soft beds.
  • Occasionally, 300 mg of corticosteroids are injected into each vein of the foot and a tourniquet is applied to ensure its permanence in the arterial venous network for one hour.

Other care

In case laminitis is chronic, a pathological hardware is applied, avoiding touching the heels.

The foot should also be cleaned daily, lime baths with 10% copper sulphate and then lubricated with vegetable tar and grease (foot ointment).

To harden the sole, it is also very appropriate to immerse the foot or feet in gasoline or petrol, leave 10 minutes and, once dry, apply ointment. It will be observed that as the case grows (1 cm per month) the total recovery is achieved in about 6 months.

What is laminitis

Laminatis Description
Laminatis Description

The problem with this disease is that the blood supply is interrupted in the horse’s hull blades.

For this reason, the basement membrane of the leg is affected.

The function of which is to join the distal phalanx of the inner wall of the helmet.

The pain is very strong in addition to an inflammation in the area and this union is weakened significantly.

Among the consequences of not discovering in time is a depression in the frontal zone of the crown of the helmet, until the total separation of the sheets of the same.

Laminitis
Laminitis

Symptom

Among the symptoms of laminitis are:

  • Lameness, especially when the horse turns in circles
  • Heat in the helmet
  • Increase in digital pulse
  • Pain in the area of the tip of the frog when pressure is applied with a helmet pliers
  • Resistance to walk (they walk sore, as if they “stepped on eggs”) If the animal does not want to walk when we force it walks with measured steps short and fast
  • Antalgic posture (to relieve pain stretch the fore limbs forward and the hind limbs also forward, as if falling backwards)
  • When affected in all four extremities the pain and discomfort is so strong that the animal lies down.

Many people simply put the horse on a “starvation ration” and severely limit the horses’ diet of all nutrients. This is one of the worst things you could do as horses still require maintenance energy to function as well as essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals to assist in repairing damage caused by laminitis. At a bare minimum your horse requires approximately 1% of his own body weight as roughage.

Laminitis is a disease that requires extreme care. The call to the veterinarian in this case and give all the necessary care to the horse should be considered urgently. Timely care guarantees total healing in the face of this terrible disease. With a good diet and preventive measures we can save many headaches.

Iñigo Muguerza

Iñigo Muguerza’s biography

Iñigo Muguerza Sainz de la Maza was born in Madrid in 1963. He is a Spanish sculptor and comes from a family of artists. He is grandson of the guitarist Regino Sáinz de la Maza (1896-1981) and great-grandson of the writer Concha Espina (1869-1955).

Muguerza developed his artistic education in the Madrid studio of Amadeo Roca, between 1977 and 1985.

He is an experienced rider. This led him to set up a blacksmith as part of his work as a sculptor of metals (mainly bronze), using the forge and exercising his trade as a blacksmith.

For the sculptor Iñigo Muguerza blacksmithing is also an art, and very close to sculpture.

“An Argentine friend-an illiterate gaucho-taught me how to make horseshoes twenty years ago.”

But in addition to an art, blacksmithing is also a science. The aluminum horseshoes manufactured by Muguerza are therapeutic. The aluminiúm horseshoes solve different physical problems that animals may have.

Facets of Íñigo Muguerza

Inigo Muguerza Sainz de la Maza is a man of many facets. For he has become a sculptor, painter and a student of horsemanship and everything related to horses. It also has the ability to unite theory and practice. In his library there are hundreds of volumes about horsemanship and horses, but he does not theorize from the stand on cession to the leg, supports or meeting. Or how it affects the weight and position of the rider in the balance of the horse and its biomechanics. Íñigo does and teaches. In its center, horse-friendly riding is cultivated, correct and harmonious.

Artistic trajectory

Iñigo Muguerza Sculpture
Iñigo Muguerza Sculpture

Iñigo has in his veins that artistic dowry that inherits him from his ancestors in this case of the musician Regino Sainz de la Maza -his grandfather- and the writer Concha Espina -his great-grandmother. However, his potential exerts it with his hands, capturing looks, gestures, expressions, which he hides in the mud and then fuses them in bronze.

  • In 1991, the family of Fernando Martín, basketball player of Real Madrid and the Spanish team, commissioned a sculpture that was placed next to his tomb, in the cemetery of La Almudena, Madrid.
  • In the year 2001, the City Council of Oviedo inaugurated the urban sculpture known as “Caballo”, designed by Muguerza, to decorate the facilities of El Asturcón Municipal Equestrian Center. The facilities were inaugurated in El Molinón in 1999. With the statue, which represents a horse that could be described as “Greco-Latin” for its stylized figure and its brio. It represents a steed with stretched snout, bristly rump and muscular legs.
  • A statue in homage to his grandfather Regino can be visited in the public library of his Mazcuerras, in front of the house where the musician rehearsed every day. Two hands, in bronze, simulate playing on a guitar.
  • His great-grandmother Concha Espina has also given him an instant of eternity. The statue, also in Mazcuerras, represents the writer in her last years. Being blind, writing in the falsillas that she used, next to two doves, the laurel of success and a leaf of cagiga that symbolizes the costumbrismo.

Artificial insemination in mares

Artificial insemination in mares

Dec31

Artificial insemination in mares, without a doubt a subject that can be controversial for many.

Every horse lover must have heard at least once about this procedure.

And it is gaining more and more space. Do you agree with the insemination or do you prefer natural riding?

In this issue we will address this issue and soon we will talk about its advantages and disadvantages.

Artificial Insemination of a Mare - Instructional Video

Artificial insemination

Artificial insemination in mares is the process of fertilization through the introduction, by clinical means, of the semen extracted from a horse in a certain mare.

This system has been of great help in various domestic species, especially in cattle, where it has allowed great genetic progress in both milk and meat production.

In recent years it has been perfected and simplified for use on horses and, thus, many races have adopted it all over the world.

Technique

The place where the semen is naturally deposited is in the anterior portion of the cervix.

Most most sperm end in the uterine horns.

During the technique of artificial insemination in mares, the semen can be deposited in the body of the uterus (Transcervical AI) or in the tip of a uterine horn (Deep AI).

Material used:

  • Insemination pipette (deep or transcervical)
  • Sterile syringe
  • Sterile gel
  • All equipment must be maintained at 37 ºC
Insemination pipette
Insemination pipette

Preparation of the mare

Before inseminating the mare, the tail should be bandaged and kept away from the perineal area.

Subsequently the entire perineal region; that is, anus, vulva and buttocks should be washed with soap and water 3 times, then dried with paper towels.

The semen

The semen used to inseminate the mare should be in a non-spermicidal syringe and protected (by the operator’s non-sterile hand) from adverse environmental conditions such as ultraviolet rays or extremely cold or hot environmental temperature.

Veterinarian

The veterinarian who executes the procedure must be considered:

  • Use a sterile palpation glove
  • The insemination pipette should be held with the index finger and the palm of the hand to ensure that the tip of the pipette is protected by a sterile environment.
  • You must have a sterile lubricant on the back of your hand covered with the sterile glove and the pipette.

Transcervical

For artificial insemination in mares there are two techniques: the transcervical and the deep.

The transcervical is the most common and is performed by inserting the gloved hand through the vulva lips through the vestibule and vagina.

The angle should be 45º so that the tip of the pipette can enter the cervix.

Once the fingers have located the cervix, the index finger is used to guide the tip of the pipette into the cervix.

The pipette is then inserted approximately 1 cm into the uterus.

The syringe with the semen is then connected to the exposed tip of the pipette and the plunger of the syringe is pressed slowly depositing the semen into the uterus.

Deep

In this type of insemination the pipette must be flexible and 65 cm long.

Once it is placed in the uterine body, the exposed tip of the pipette is held with the opposite hand externally. With the hand with which it was introduced, a rectal palpation will be performed.

Lazlos horse of Muhammad

Lazlos, the Muhammad’s horse

Dec31

Lazlos the horse of the Prophet Muhammad and the spirituality in Islam.

The horse was an animal that carried on its back the man who thought, sighed, understood designs. He became brave as he traveled in the penetrating dunes of the desert in the Arab countries.

In this way, with this important mission came Lazlos a horse given by a governor of Egypt to the Prophet Muhammad.

Importance of Lazlos the horse of Muhammad

Quickly the founding prophet of Islam thought of a name for such an important gift. He decided to call him Lazlos, which means “desert horse”.

Because he knew that more than a means of transportation. Lazlos would be his companion, confidant, guardian of long days and nights in solitude to expand the purpose of Allah (God of this religion).

Muhammad and his horse Lazlos
Muhammad and his horse Lazlos

Lazlos lived next to Mahoma some of the most famous moments of Islam. One of them was his entrance from Muhammad to Mecca. Meca is the sacred place of Islam and currently the main pilgrimage site.

Accordingly, Muhammad faithfully trusted his transit over the equine, thus achieving followers, visiting oases, acting as mediator between neighboring tribes.

Likewise, in favor of consolidating the Islamic religion, he led armies, assaulted caravans of merchants, and fought against non-Muslims.

From this vision, Lazlos, the horse of Muhammad, awoke in the prophet an infinite love and gratitude for the horses, especially for the mares.

The Legend of Muhammad as the creator of the Arabian horse breed:

In the beginnings of Islam, the prophet to achieve more followers thought about two main aspects: religious fervor and having fast horses.

Muhammad worried about having a better breed of pure horses, selected a group of horses. After that, Muhammad deprived them of water for seven days.

Later he left them free to drink. Just before reaching the place where the water was, Muhammad called them. Only five mares came to his call. Those five mares would be the ones selected to form the Arabian horse breed.

However Lazlos Muhammad’s horse was one of the favorites, since it allowed him to live great moments to maintain the principles of Islam.

Phrases of the Koran inspired by Lazlos the horse of Muhammad

In the Koran there are phrases that denote the transcendence of horses of the Arab race for the spirituality of the human being.

Among which we can mention “The devil will never dare to enter a shop inhabited by an Arab horse”

He also wrote: “The more barley grains you give to your horse, the more sins you will be forgiven.”

In short, both phrases warn about the purity of horses as animals at the service of man.

Also, the way a man treats his horse can help him mitigate his sins. This was a part of the concerns of the great prophet Muhammad.

There is no doubt about the recognition, gratitude and commitment that the horse of Mohammed was born from Lazlos on the relationship between man and horse. This allowed to maintain the lineage of Arabian equines that among its characteristics highlights its beauty, intelligence and good health.

The role of Muhammad and Lazlos in history

Battle of Badr
Battle of Badr

In short, humanity rests on different forms of thought and belief in God from its essence as creator of the whole.

However, the eastern Arab countries specifically Muslims keep their precepts, philosophy and ways of life keeping the reference to the Prophet Muhammad.

It is important to note that before Muhammad, there was a large list of messengers sent by God. They had the mission of helping humanity to care for creation. Among them, it is worth mentioning: Abraham, Moses and Jesus of Nazareth.

With this story happened in Saudi Arabia between the years 570 to 632 d.C. the horses like Lazlos, the horse of Mahoma not only was one of the main means of transport, also accompanied to the man in moments of war and peace.

Finally on the back of Lazlos, rests the most radiant moments of the great prophet. The precepts that defined Islam as a religion in the Middle East. Beside him he developed the prayers that Muhammad would recite to Allah in moments of meditation. It is conflict, serenity and glory, therefore its value in history as a noble and resilient animal.
