The horse in the movie “Hidalgo”

“Hidalgo” is an American film from 2004, belonging to the adventure genre. It was directed by Joe Johnston and starring Viggo Mortensen, Zuleikha Robinson and Omar Sharif.

Summary of the movie Hidalgo

Hidalgo
Hidalgo

The film was based on a true story about the most important long distance horse race. Hidalgo is an epic adventure story. It is also an action film that tells the story of a man to recover his dignity.

This race, called the Ocean of Fire, was held every year for centuries. It was a test of survival of 3,000 miles through the Arabian desert. Which was a real challenge that only the best Arabian horses could overcome, the purest and noblest race, property of the powerful royal dynasties.

In 1890, a rich sheikh invited an American and his horse to participate for the first time in the race. Frank T. Hopkins was a cowboy. In turn an expedition rider belonging to the United States Cavalry Corps declared the best rider in the history of the West.

The sheikh wanted to test his pretensions. Facing the American horseman and his horse, Hidalgo, against the best Arabian horses and the best Bedouin riders. For Frank, in the Ocean of Fire, not only was his pride and honor at stake, but also his survival since both he and his horse were trying to make an impossible feat possible.

Highlights

The producers of Hidalgo were delighted at the prospect of shooting the film. This film was characterized as a mixture of action, adventures and the story of a man’s journey towards his redemption. It should be noted that the setting of the story is an exciting horse race, but the genuine race is what a man does to forgive himself.

Critics

“Hidalgo” is a throwback to a more innocent time when heroes and their horses risked everything just because life was so damned boring in the slow lane.

The movie is a completely fictionalized version of the life of a real cowboy named Frank T. Hopkins; a moment’s research on the Web will suggest that an accurate portrait of his life would have been much more brief and very depressing.”

Roger Ebert: Chicago Sun-Times

The real man behind “Hidalgo”

Frank T. Hopkins Borned in August 11, 1865. Hopkins said he was born to a Lakota mother and European-American father, that he grew up in both cultures, and that he learned to ride and care for horses at an early age. Was an American professional horseman who at one time performed with the Ringling Brothers Circus. He was supposedly a legendary long-distance rider, who won 400 races but there is no evidence that support it. He was recognized by his contemporaries as supporting the preservation of the mustang.

In 1926 Hopkins was foreman of a construction crew, digging a subway tunnel in downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

There is a marriage certificate that Hopkins signed in New York in 1929 where his age was put at 44 which, if true, would place his birth in 1885. However, the photograph shown, said to have been taken in 1905, seems to show the appearance of a middle-aged man.

Frank died on  November 5, 1951. His body is interred in Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens County, New York.

History of equitation

Throughout the history of mankind the horse has accompanied man on his long journeys as a means of transport, and of course as a companion, however as man has evolved. He has also done so with his relationship with the horse that gives rise to the discipline of Horsemanship becoming an elegant sport, where the rider uses all his skill to dominate his horse through constant training to jump obstacles and fences inside a circuit.

Equitation in middle age
Equitation in middle age

The Horse in Ancient Times

In the Bronze Age humanity saw that the horse could become a very useful animal. In this way the horse was integrated as a fundamental element in his daily tasks. Likewise, in the Ancient Age the horse was used for war. The main armies counted on cavalry. At this time appears the first horse famous in history: Bucéfalo, the horse of Alexander the Great, hunted and tamed by him.

Also in the Middle Ages was characterized by the Spanish cavalry or “School of Knights”. In those institutions, men and knights were formed to act in combat and war. After a long time and many battles, the steed was used in tournaments and horse games for peacetime, to train for wartime. Thus, equitation is born as a sport.

Beginnings of Riding

In the year 1539 the count of Fiaschi founds a riding school in the Italian city of Ferrara. Everything indicates that it was the first riding school of which we have news.

The Latin word equitatio arrived in english as equitation. The concept is used to name the discipline related to the management of an equine. It is an art and a sport whose practitioners show their skill for riding.

Cares to be considered

Equitarion
Equitarion

Equitation also involves knowledge to care for horses. It is important that the rider is aware that he stays in a stable with the optimal conditions for the good health of the equine. These conditions guarantee the good performance of the animal at the time of training. That is why it is essential to achieve competences in order to achieve excellent results.

Regarding the care mentioned above, there is a qualified staff that might be responsible for ensuring that the logistics are met. You should also take strict control with your veterinarian, as any condition will negatively affect the behavior of the horse.

Use of appropriate elements

Also for the training and competition of horse riding you need the use of appropriate equipment called rigging or rigging for the horse. These equipment are important when the equine is mounted since with this you have animal control. On the other hand, the rider must wear appropriate clothing such as boots, gloves, pants and blouse. The helmet is essential because it protects if at any moment the rider suffers a fall.

There is a basic type of equitation, where the main thing is to learn to ride. There are also more advanced modes, used to jump, run races, carry livestock, and exhibit. Additionally, horses are used for other equestrian sports of high competition, such as jumping, training or dressage, three-day test, high jump, raid, hooks, volte, pole, duck, equestrian and rodeo….

Positive effects of horses and riding

Horses are also mounted to achieve the rehabilitation of people with different diseases or disabilities. Its therapeutic effect positively affects the neurological, emotional, and psychomotor level among other benefits of equitation as a sport for people with disabilities.

Equitation is governed by the International Equestrian Federation. It is an Olympic sport since 1900 in the disciplines of jumping, training and full competition of riding. We leave you with a phrase that reflects the qualities of an excellent rider.

“Remember to ride with the hands of a Lady, the position of a King and the manners of a Knight”

Equestrian sports in Venezuela is more than hanging out with friends in a corner and being aware of which horse wins the races, it’s more than making your fingers sound and saying “dale, dale”. Hippics in Venezuela has names, names that have enriched our tricolor and have made the Venezuelan National Anthem sound on various podiums in the world. Know the Venezuelan Riders that have reached success.

Some of those names are Gustavo Mirabal, Gustavo Arroyo, Andrés Rodríguez and Pablo Barrios.

Gustavo Mirabal. One sport, one passion.

Gustavo Mirabal Castro
Gustavo Mirabal Castro

At age 10 year old  was the first federative competition in the “Club La Lagunita” in Venezuela of the rider Gustavo Mirabal Castro. Influenced by his father’s passion for horses, he began to fall in love with equestrian sports.

“My dad has been passionate about horses since he was very young and when I turned 9 he took me to the stables of the club where we were partners and from then on I also became passionate,” he said in an interview with this website .

At 9 years old, the young Mirabal was already attracted by the equestrian jump and the horse-horse connection, a binomial that years later would become the engine of his life. He began a path that others venezuelan riders followed.

“As an amateur rider I competed in the best competitions in the world. I am lucky to say that I won in all the contests in which I signed up, (Florida, Madrid, Belgium, Paris, London, Saint Tropez, Cannes, Monaco, Gucci Master Paris, La Baule and Vienna), all were special because when I was on the podium the national anthem sounded, it’s very exciting, “he said.

Triumphs over the horse and at his side

The triumphs of Mirabal were seen with him on a horse, but also with his horses mounted by other riders. This Venezuelan opened his own breeding and training farm for horses and riders in the United States in 2009. This contributed to the preparation and professional development of other competitors.

“In the morning I would jump the amateur tests and in the afternoon my horses would compete with the professional riders with whom I was associated. It was the perfect combination, ” he said. He has developed several Venezuelan riders.

The businessman was also allied with the number 1 rider of Spain, Sergio Álvarez Moya, recalls with great joy, especially the contest in Vienna “where I was lucky to win the three amateur tests, dream the anthem, be interviewed about the horse in track. When leaving the field there was a group of Venezuelans super excited to listen to the national anthem and see the flag waving at the top, magical moments especially in the special moments that are happening in our country, “he said.

In May 2017, Mirbal competed in the Longines Global Champions Tour in Madrid where he won the 1.15m race, after two time trials with the G & C horses Luca Brasi and G & C Lucy. The victory of the Venezuelan inaugurated the tournament.

The first time was 30.82 seconds riding on G & C Luca Brasi, then scored 28.88 with G & C Lucy, securing the first and second place in that category.

In June 2017, the “Gloria al Bravo Pueblo”, Venezuela’s National Anthem, rang in the 4th edition of the Longines Athina Onassis Horse Show, where Mirabal set the pace in the jumping competition and set a time of 35.10 seconds with his horse G & C Luca Basi.

Gustavo Arroyo

In 2014, the Venezuelan rider Gustavo Arroyo recorded a time of 22.52 seconds with his horse G & C Blue, time that earned him the first place in the equestrian jump tournament. Before the start of their participation, this competition was dominated by Spaniards Miguel Álvarez-Buylla (23.58) and Cristina Buti (24.51). They finished in second and third place respectively.

In this competition participated 32 Spanish pairs (horse-riders) and a total of 60. The tests were played in two phases with obstacles of 1.40 meters.

Arroyo and Mirabal have worked together in the development of young horses and Venezuelan riders, being Arroyo instructor of Mirabal.

The work of both found a perfect ally in the Spanish rider Sergio Álvarez Moya. This means more development of equestrian sport in European territory.

Andrés Rodríguez

"<yoastmark

He was a very talented athlete between Venezuelan riders. He winning a silver medal at the Pan American Games in Toronto in 2015. Thanks to this victory he won his place at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016.

“This is incredible. The dream of every athlete is to go to the Olympic Games and that is really what I have been working on for the last three years. I achived to classify these games. I wanted the gold medal but I am also happy with the Olympic quota.”. Said the athlete after learning that he had obtained the pass to Rio.

However, the dream of this 31-year-old man was frustrated. A traffic accident that took his life on January 4, 2016.

The “caraqueño” was the tenth to qualify for the world’s highest sporting event. He classified after being the second in the individual jumping test of riding in Toronto. By the time of his death the Venezuelan was ranked 41st in the Ranking of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).

Given this unfortunate event the Venezuelan Federation of Equestrian Sports granted the quota to the Venezuelan riders. Pablo Barrios was appointed to replace him. He achived to reach the final test of individual jump but did not reach the numbers to obtain the Olympic medal.

Pablo Barrios

Pablo Barrios
Pablo Barrios

For Barrios, participation in the Olympic Games of Rio de Janeiro 2016, was his second participation in the Olympic Games. Pablo had already represented Venezuela in Beijing 2008, where he finished with his horse Sinatra in position 40; For that then the rider occupied the position 102 of the ranking of the FEI.

Pablo Barrios was champion of Central America and the Caribbean in Mayagüez 2010.

His recent performance (the Central American and Caribbean Games Barranquilla 2018)

He led the individual jump podium with time of 41.00, also closed as overall champion in these games. He closed his performance with three medals: Two gold and one bronze. he is standing out among the Venezuelan riders

We can say that in Venezuela there is talent for the sport on horseback. New generations of venezuelan riders are coming preparing to represent the Caribbean country in the different competitions of this discipline. Only remains to support and consolidate our athletes who are undoubtedly willing to harvest many triumphs.

Equine Dentistry

Equine dentistry

The oral health of animals is as important as that of human beings. Except that horses can not brush their teeth and do dental cleaning rituals as a habit. So you have to resort to expert professionals in the field. These experts periodical reviews of the animal’s teeth. In the case of the horse they only check their teeth, but they do the cleaning. In case of any condition in the mouth, the professional will indicate the necessary medication for recovery.

Equine dentistry is the practice of dentistry in horses. Equine dentistry involve the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity. In some jurisdictions, the practice of equine dentistry may be restricted only to specialists, whereas in others it is not controlled.

For a horse, its mouth, is the beginning of a long, complex and delicate digestive system, as well as its fundamental “wheel” at the time of being mounted. In addition, their teeth are their “hands” with which to defend themselves and “catch something” among others. This, together with the continuous growth and wear of the teeth, makes periodic inspection of the mouth by a specialist veterinarian indispensable.

For this reason we will address everything related to equine dentistry.

The purpose of Equine Dentistry

Today, riders and breeders begin to show greater concern for the dental health of their horses. So, Equine Dentistry resurges with the strength it deserves. Today, you can talk about the dentist as one of the key professionals in the care of the horse.

Equine dentistry is going through a process of rediscovery. Equine dentistry was practiced as long ago as 600 BCE in China, and has long been important as a method of assessing the age of a horse. It is not a new science, there are bibliographies and instruments of work quite advanced at the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, the horse was a key element in the life of man: motor at work and usual means of travel.

Equine Dentistry
Equine Dentistry

Equine dentistry in horses under 5 years old.

Like humans, horses between 2 and a half years and 5 years after the change of the “milk” dentition by the permanent one should be reviewed every 4 and 6 months. In this period they should be checked more frequently, especially in the case of racehorses. Some of the functions of equine dentistry in horses under 5 years are:

  • Liminate the premolars and molars adequately depending on the horse: age, use, specific alterations … in the cases that are necessary.
  • To control the eruption of milk teeth and its subsequent replacement by permanent ones in the case of the incisors and premolars performing the appropriate treatment in the event that alterations occur in this process (very frequent). If not treated at this time, they may lead to serious alterations.
  • Control the eruption of the molars, as well as the fangs in the case of the males (and the females that can present them).
  • In the event that specific alterations occur, perform the appropriate treatment.

Equine dentistry in horses over 5 years old.

  • The revision of the mouth should be made between 6 and 12 months depending on:
  • -Age: the younger the growth rate is higher and the formation of the tips will be faster. In addition, those for sports use should be checked frequently.

Equine dentistry in geriatric horses:

In these animals the speed of eruption is less, but the alterations may be in a more advanced state. Older horses, whether they ride or not, they should be checked once a year. In this age the loss of teeth and the presence of periodontal disease are frequent.

Characteristics of Marengo

  • Marengo in Italy on July 14, 1800

Death of the Marengo Horse

After Marengo’s death, the owners gave up their skeleton for the historical value that it had to the Sandhurst National Army Museum. However, they stayed with the front hooves. An artisan embossed them in silver until they were converted into two decorative boxes. One of these pieces ended up in the museum, but the other was missing for almost 200 years.

For its part, the skeleton of Marengo, which was restored and temporarily relocated on the occasion of the celebration of the second centenary of the Battle of Waterloo, remains one of the attractions of the British Army Museum, although its front helmets rest in different places.

Anecdotal note

It is worth noting that Napoleon Bonaparte had approximately 130 horses for his personal use. Most of their equines were gray, bay or sorrel. His favorite horses were Arabs, the Bavarians and the Russians.

In this order of ideas, Napoleon gave classic or mythological names to his horses. Among those names are Cyrus, Taurus, Tamerlane, Nero and Cerberé. In addition it granted names to them of geographic places or important victories, so much that Cyrus was red-baptize like Austerlitz, a Friedland a Wagram, a Montevideo and a Cordova. Others received more creative names such as Roitelet, Intendant and Coquet.

The amount of historical information about Marengo, the horse of Napoleon Bonaparte, makes us think about the historical role of the horse. Currently the horse is not in a relevant role in history but when we look back we discover that our world was sculpted at the trot of a steed.

For 2015 it had assets valued at 4,126,793 euros and annual profits of almost one hundred thousand. This business that began with his brother, continued in partnership with, his father-in-law for the time, Amancio Ortega tycoon of Inditex and well known for Zara stores.

From his divorce he treasures a great relationship with his ex-wife, a beautiful son and Carlo 273, one of the horses with which he has reaped great successes which was ceded to him by the generosity of the Ortega Family.

After his divorce he partnered with Gustavo Mirabal and G & C Farm with whom he has reaped some of his greatest successes.

As a result of his association with Gustavo Mirabal, in 2016 he crowned champion of Spain at Club Pineda de Sevilla with the horse “G & C Quitador Rochelais”.

In 2017 he won the Cannes CSI with “G & C Arrayan” and managed to reach 14th place in the GCT (Global Champions Tour) ranking. Thus, this is another great success of his association with the specialist in equestrian development and businessman Gustavo Mirabal.

The High Performance Center (Centro de Alto Rendimiento – CAR) of Álvarez Moya and his association with Gustavo Mirabal

Precisely Alvarez Moya launched a High Performance Center in Madrid in order to expand its business. Initially Gustavo Mirabal Castro and his wife María Carolina Chapellín de Mirabal of the Farm G & C Inc company directed the center.

The extensive experience of the Mirabal was developed since 2009 in Wellington, where they form riders and sponsor some prizes. Precisely the facilities of G & C Farm opened the framework of the WEF and for a decade remained at the top of the Equestrian world. In March 2018 Gustavo Mirabal retires from the business with G & C Farm. Thus, the Mirabal keep in front of the High Performance Center of Álvarez Moya with whom they have several horses together.

In January 2018, the Asturian rider saw the inauguration of its Equestrian High Performance Center (CAR) in Madrid with 26,000 m2 of land in the La Moraleja urbanization. With Avant-garde facilities and capacity for more than 40 horses, the Horse Farm La Moraleja has:

  • Gallop track
  • Automatic walkers
  • Luxury boxes with exterior window
  • Heating and air conditioning for horses

Equestrian competitions prizes are not large and registration is expensive. Sergio’s business is buying young horses that he trains and makes an exhaustive training process. That Sergio sets them up in national and international competitions is the best showcase for the exhibition of his horses.

Thus we are sure that the association between the Asturian Sergio Álvarez Moya and Gustavo Mirabal will give results. One with a keen sense of equine selection, and another with experience in high-tech facilities. In conclusion, together they will produce new and greater champions to the world of Spanish horse racing.

Mark met a member of the English Civil War Society who asked about supplying cavalry horses. Mark agreed and it was his first related job.

“All the people who helped with Riding for the Disabled came to give us a hand. We lit bonfires, banged and clattered dustbin lids, used gunshots and improvised all we could to try and recreate the noise and chaos of a battlefield.”

Two weeks later the event in Yeovil and it was a success. This led to more work from the Sealed Knot, English Heritage and the Royal Armouries.

“I think we were really lucky,” says Mark. “We seemed to come along at a time when others were retiring and we picked up the work.”

A turn in the business

The bussiness turned from live displays to supply horses, talent and training for films with Ben Atkinson’s help, Mark’s son.

“I prefer the filming and Ben prefers the live displays so it works well,” Mark says
