Indications and contraindications of Equine Therapy
Currently, alternative therapies are used by people as a main treatment or as a complement to medicine, improving all the physical, mental and emotional aspects of the patient.
Alternative therapies will always be directed by a therapist, either in an office or in outdoor spaces depending on the type of therapy that is applied.
Depending on the therapeutic process it can give short or prolonged times depending on the disease treated and the type of therapy. Among them we have Equine Therapy, however it is indicated for many conditions and diseases. But in turn is contraindicated for other diseases which we will mention in this article.
Indications of Equine Therapy
Since terpia with equines stimulates physiological and psychological responses, it demonstrates a wide therapeutic application in medicine, psychology, psychiatry and pedagogy. Contraindications of Equine Therapy
As this is a physical therapy that mobilizes the joint-muscle system. There are contraindications of equine therapy for some clinical pictures in which it is not convenient or favorable to apply it. In general, equinotherapy is contraindicated in any case, where it should not be mobilized and where inflammatory processes exist.
Regarding the diseases or conditions for which this therapy with horses is contraindicated. Some contraindications of equine therapy are: Hip dislocation, Atlantoaxial instability, pathological fracture, spinal instability, scoliosis greater than 40 °, hemophilia, osteogenesis imperfecta (also known as ” brittle bone disease “), spinal trauma above the sixth thoracic vertebrae, uncontrolled epilepsy, heart failure, inflammatory bone diseases, rheumatic myogelosis. Unfortunately, the list mentioned above is not feasible in the use of equine therapy since it can complicate the panorama.
Finally, it is convenient to highlight that the person in charge of doing the session requires a medical report from the patient’s representative. In fact, where he explains the diagnosis and if he is a candidate to participate in the treatment with horses.
